Wimauma is an unincorporated town in Hillsborough County. Many people mistakenly believe that Wimauma is named after an Indian word like many of the cities and towns that surround Wimauma. The truth is that Captain C.H. Davis named the town after his three daughters: Willie, Maude, and Mary. He took the first few letters of each of their names to form Wimauma. This town wraps around what was once known as Lake Tiger, but has been renamed for the town. Wimauma has easy access to Interstate 75 and US Highway 301 is one of the major roads through the town. Little Manatee Park is just southwest of Wimauma. Wimauma is located far enough out of the city to enjoy the sounds of the crickets chirping at night and be enveloped by the laid back style of southern Florida, while being only 20 miles from Tampa and 15 miles from Bradenton. This means that Tampa International Airport is within 30 minutes, as are the many universities Tampa has to offer, like the University of Tampa, University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College, and Everest College.
