About Walton County
Walton County's hilly terrain is unlike most of Florida. Located in the Florida Panhandle, it is home to Florida's highest point, Britton Hill, at 345 feet. In contrast, the southern portion of Walton county hosts many neighborhoods along its Gulf Coast. Walton County was established in 1824 and was named after George Walton, Secretary of the Territory of West Florida from 1821 to 1822 and of the combined territory from 1822 until 1826. Of historical interest, his daughter, Octavia, suggested Tallahassee as the name of the new capital. Throughout Walton County's history, farming has been the chief occupation of the majority of Walton County residents. Some of Walton’s most important staple crops are corn and soybeans. The principal industrial development of Walton County is poultry raising and processing. Additionally, the dairy and beef cattle business are also established industries, as well as timber and related products.
