About Monroe County
Named for the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe, Monroe County was created in 1823. Without being exact, Monroe County reflects about 800 islands or “keys” on nautical charts and if the many islands in the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands were included, there would be over 10,000. The keys portion of Monroe County is generally divided into four sections of population: the Upper Keys, the Middle Keys, the Lower Keys and Key West. Present day Monroe County has about 1,144,800 acres depending on whether the bay bottom is counted. The inhabited or partially inhabited keys are about 65,000 acres which accounts for about 5.3% of the total. Most of the terrestrial part of Monroe County is on the mainland of Florida and is almost entirely within Everglades National Park and the Big Cypress National Preserve.
