DeSoto County was name after the Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto Polar, who traveled the southeastern region of the United States. DeSoto runs along the banks of the Peace River and US Highway 17. The rich, fertile soils of DeSoto County are perfect for growing citrus and raising livestock. DeSoto County has only one incorporated municipality, Arcadia, which happens to be the county seat. The towns of Brownville, Fort Ogden, Hull, Lake Suzy, and Nocatee are unincorporated. There is one abandoned settlement within DeSoto that brings in tourists called Pine Level.
