North Port is located in Sarasota County along the Myakka River. This city is known for the artesian springs that bubble up here; Warm Mineral Spring. There is also a water feature that was once thought of as a lake/spring called “Little Salt Spring” situated in North Port. It was later found out that this was actually an ancient karst formation (lake that is directly connected to the aquifer through venting tubes). These two features bring tourists to the area that want to see the historical proof of Florida’s flora and fauna. North Port was a planned community that was name “North Port Charlotte” after the developer’s home town. The residents voted to change the name to “North Port” to separate the city from the South Carolina city.
