About New Port Richey
New Port Richey was named after Captain Aaron Richey who established Port Richey in the late 1800s. Located in West Pasco County about 30 miles northwest of Greater Tampa, New Port Richey was incorporated in 1924. The City of New Port Richey has a quaint historical downtown area along Main Street which hosts many cultural events in the downtown Sims Park area. Sims Park also gives residents access to the Pithlachascotee (Cotee) River with its public boat ramp. The Cotee River is the site for an annual boat parade. The Chasco Fiesta is another popular annual event that takes place in downtown New Port Richey and celebrates the Native Americans who were once the inhabitants of the area. Activities of the Fiesta include a parade through Main Street, live music at the Sims Park Amphitheater and a carnival at Orange Lake. During the 1920s, many famous Hollywood screen actors such as Thomas Meighan, found their home in New Port Richey. At one time, there was a possibility of developing a motion picture studio in the city but the Great Depression put an end to the possibility of that. Since the 2000s, the city has focused efforts toward redevelopment of the city. Subdivisions of New Port Richey include Trinity Oaks, Fox Wood at Trinity, Fox Hollow, Heritage Springs and Champion's Club. Zip codes include 34652 through 34656. The Trinity area has been developing at a fast pace both with residential and commercial real estate. Many new shopping centers and restaurants have gone up along SR 54 and a new hospital is in the works as well that will be located just East of Little Road on SR 54. It is predicted that this will draw a lot of jobs and new residents to the area.
