Merritt Island is part of Florida’s famous Space Coast. This island has no actual city located on it, though it does have several small, unincorporated communities on the island. The northern end of the island consists of the Merritt Island Wildlife Preserve and NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center. The southern end of the island is mostly residential with a small business/industrial district. The only way to travel to and from the island by car is to traverse the causeways/drawbridges. State Roads 520 and 528 travel east-west between the island and the mainland. State Road 3 is a 4-lane highway that connects the Space Center to the southern end of the island. Merritt Island has a public airport located in the southern end of the island.
