Melbourne, a full service municipality on the Space Coast of East Central Florida, is the community hub of southern Brevard County. While most of Melbourne is located on the Florida mainland, a small portion is located on a barrier island. The Indian River Lagoon separates the mainland from the island which is a narrow strip of land between the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. Melbourne and Brevard County were also rated in a 1998 Money Magazine "Best Places" survey 7th among medium-sized Southern communities. The City of Melbourne is promoting economic development and is actively engaged in revitalizing three areas of the city. Melbourne contains defense and tech companies with a high concentration of high-tech workers.
