About Madison County
Madison County was created in 1827 and was named after James Madison, one of our Founding Fathers, and the fourth President of the United States of America. Madison served from 1809 to 1817. When Madison County was first chartered it was Florida’s largest county. This was of course before Florida was admitted to the Union in 1845. Madison County consists of one city and two towns. These include the City of Madison which was named after Madison C. Livingston, who donated the first parcel of land to the city in 1838, The Town of Lee, and the Town of Greenville which was actually the home of very well known American Musician Ray Charles. Madison County is one of Florida’s 5 dry counties, has a current population of about 18,862 people and is a single voting district.
