About Charlotte County
Charlotte County is located on the Gulf coast of southwest Florida, north of Ft. Myers. Established in 1921 from a section of De Soto County, Charlotte County is named for Charlotte Harbor. The bulk of the population of Charlotte County is in the eastern portion near Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River. Late in the 19th century cattle ranchers and homesteaders transformed the Charlotte County wilderness into civilization and transportation industries propelled its growth. When the railroads rolled into the area, they brought wealthy vacationers during the winter months. It is thought that sport fishing for tarpon was invented at Boca Grande Pass. In 1924, developer Joel Bean encouraged Charlotte County's population growth. He created the town of El Jobean, and anagram of his name, which soon attracted circus and carnival performers who used it as their winter base.
