Escambia County, named after the Escambia River whose name comes from the Spanish word for "barter," is the westernmost county in the state. The island of Santa Rosa is part of Escambia County, Florida. Interestingly, Escambia County, Florida shares a name and a common boundary with Escambia County, Alabama to the north, a very unusual occurrence. Escambia County is home to University of West Florida just north of Interstate 10 which traverses the county.
