Union County was created when the residents broke from Bradford County in 1921. They named this new region Union, after the American ideal of unity. Union County covers about 250 square miles and contains three unincorporated communities: Lake Butler (the county seat), the Town of Rainford, and the Town of Worthington Springs. Union County Schools are rated “A” schools. The three public schools are Lake Butler Elementary, Lake Butler Middle School, and Union County High School. This county lies just outside of the Gainesville, Jacksonville, or the Saint Augustine metro areas. Gainesville, with the University of Florida Gators, is about 30 minutes south of Lake Butler. Saint Augustine, with its beautiful beaches and rich history, is about an hour east of Lake Butler. The City of Jacksonville, with its nightlife and colleges, is about an hour and half from Lake Butler.
