Nestled among the pine trees and the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, hides the agricultural and fishing “hot spot” of Florid; Taylor County. This “Tree Capital of the South” is covered in Lodgepole Pines that were indigenous to Florida before man settled here. The county seat is the City of Perry, which is located in the center of Taylor County. Dekle Beach, Keaton Beach, and Steinhatchee all line the coast. The town of Steinhatchee was derived from a Native American word for “river of man”. These beach towns are wonderful fishing, crabbing, scalloping, and boating playgrounds! Hampton Springs is located in Taylor County. The springs formed at the meeting place of the Spring River and the Rocky River. The water would collect in a concrete pool built by the Hampton Springs Hotel in the 19th century. During the 1950’s, the hotel was destroyed by fire. Taylor County is working to renovate the springs and reclaim the area from the foliage that has taken over. Though Taylor County is mostly agricultural land, the county has several festivals to celebrate the culture and life of the region. The “Pickin’ in the Pines Bluegrass Festival” is held in Perry during the month of September. The residents have arts and crafts fairs, vendors, a parade, and bluegrass.
