Brooksviile is a city located in Hernando County, Florida. Brooksville was originally know as Melendez and was settled in 1845. It was established as Brooksville in 1856. Brooksville was settled by four different families; the Howell family which settled to the north, the Mays family which settled in the eastern part of town, the Hale family which settled to the west, and the Parsons family which settled in the southern part of the city. The name originates from Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina and the part he played in a drama that occurred in 1856 in the Chamber of the U.S. Senate. A speech was made by Senator Charles Sumner which was critical of slavery and its southern supporters. Brooks then beat Sumner with his cane in the Senate chamber. Brooksville has experienced considerable growth. This is most likely due to the Pasco-Hernando Community College as well as it’s several modern medical facilities. There are also three city parks in Brooksville that have picnicking facilities, trails, and sports.
